A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” declared the national leader.
The president reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his government's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
